Stationed at Acrotiri 58/59. A Javelin's brakes failed on landing and it rolled of end of runway. It ended up nose down at 45 degrees. I think pilot OK but aircraft written off.

I served on 23 Sqdn from 1960 until 1964 (Colt and Leuchars) and was a colleague of Don East, who left the first visitor's comment on this site. Most of that time we had the Mk9(R) which meant that we went on many overseas detachments which was fun, but as a 'rigger' I was continually engaged taking that awful probe on and off, which was not. Let's face it, the 'Flat Iron' was an awful aircraft to work on and keep serviceable - but I still have fond memories!

Ah Javlins, plenty of work for armourers. 2 seats, 2 ventral tanks, 4 guns and 4 missiles. Hot work in FEAF.

64 Squadron at Binbrook and then 228 OCU at Leuchars. The Jav did not give me too many problems but I was caught up in a starter fire - the starter didn't - but agile pilot had the fire under control !

My first job out of Boy Entrant school - starting crew on FAW9's of 33 Sqn Middleton-St-George, frightening. Now I fly myself, based at Gloucester where at the gate stands XH903 (G)ex 33 Sqdn. It brings back the memories of these carefree days!

I was tationed at Hal Far in Malta in 1966. We had three Javelins stop over en route back to them UK. Unfortunately, one was towed over the Shackleton radar pit, but the wood broke with the weight on a small tyre - 1 scrapped! Next morning, one started OK, but the second pilot tried an extra cartridge start that went into a wet start. Managed to put the fire out, but another one damaged beyond repair. So only one made it back to UK!

Oh the memories! The morning that the Gloster N.F's. took off from RAF Odiham and, a few hours later, the Javelins joined the circuit in their place. (If I recall correctly, there were a number of touch and goes that first time).
That noise, never to be forgotten
