Phantom FGR.2 XV402 at Hanningfield Metals, March 1993; Alan Allen

On April 30th 1990, XV402 was returning to RAF Valley where it was temporarily based at the time with four other Phantoms. When landing, the port mainwheel tyre came off the rim, resulting in the wheel beginning to dig into the runway, this created many sparks, which ignited fuel from a ruptured fuel tank. The Navigator, Flt Lt S. D. Lungley, ejected from the aircraft shortly after informing the pilot that the aircraft was on fire. The pilot decided to stay with the aircraft and kept control of it until it eventually came to a halt near the intersection. The fire was swiftly extinguished, revealing a large amount of damage to the port wing, port leg, aileron, and flap.
After the incident, the airframe awaited repair, but with the Phantoms soon to retire, XV402 was dumped at St Athan instead. The aircraft was later sold to Hanningfield Metals in Essex where it was scrapped in the year 1993, although the nose section was saved.

During the early 2000s, the cockpit was noted as being exported to Belgium with a private collector. However, this never happen, the cockpit never even left the UK. The nose section actually went to a small museum, which had the navigator's cockpit and intakes chopped off to make it a smaller, more manageable exhibit. Unfortunately, the museum later closed and the cockpit was moved to Kent for storage, and it remained there for over a decade.

Today, the cockpit resides at a private location in the UK where it is looked after by its owner.
The photo above was taken back in March 1993 by Alan Allen, shortly after it was scrapped, but when it was still complete with the Navigators cockpit and intakes.
