Canberra TT.18 WE122 at Walpole, 2nd August 2020; Richard E Flagg

WE122 was built at EE Preston as a B.2 and was awaiting collection on 13th June 1952. She entered service with 231 OCU at RAF Bassingbourn and went on to serve with 245 and 98 Squadrons at RAF Tangmere before being converted to a TT.18 in the late 1960s and then serving with FRADU from June 1974 onwards.

She was refurbished at BAe Samlesbury in 1981 and stored at RAF St. Athan for a while before returning to FRADU at RNAS Yeovilton in early 1983. She was finally withdrawn from service in February 1987, and initially flown to RAF St. Athan for storage. However, she had an additional lease of life with MoD(PE) at Llanbedr before being returned to St. Athan in 1990 and put up for disposal.

She was acquired and then scrapped by Hanningfield Metals, who retained the cockpit section, moving that to their premises at Stock, Essex, in November 1991. She was later sold to a private owner and was moved to North Weald in April 1992. She was sold again in June 1994 to Cliff Aldred and became part of the Blyth Valley Aviation Collection at Walpole in Suffolk. After Cliff's passing, she has remained there in his son's ownership and is reputedly in excellent interior condition.
