It is not impossible that a Victor might fly again, the Victor at Bruntingthorpe was in better condition than Vulcan XH558, before Vulcan to the Sky restored it. All down to money, at the end of the day

Sorry Gordon we gave air experience trips to ATC cadets in the Vulcan, can't speak for Victor. There was the famous occasion at Scampton when the aircraft cought fire at the end of the runway. The crew sort of chucked the cadet out as they evacuated. Unfortunately the static line had not been disconnected and the chute deployed so the poor lad was caught for a few seconds under the burning aircraft with his legs going like ten but not moving. He was rescued by the crew as they followed up behind him and... read more »read more »

As a young apprentice at Vickers-Armstrong from Sept 1953 I was in total awe to be put to work on the production line with the first production Valiant WP199 almost completed at the head of the line. Riveting in the bomb bay on what probably became WP205 I would take every chance to nick off & see how the first one was progressing. When it was taken out for ground testing in Dec it was odds on a first flight before Christmas but weather held things up & I missed the great moment because of the holid... read more »read more »

My first posting after RAF Apprentice training was as a Junior Technician on B Flight 232 OCU at RAF Gaydon. I wason the ground crew who towed the Valiant off the runway after it's crew had carried out a flap-less landing to bring it back after the starboard spar had failed in flight. Valiant was a majestic aircraft, always looked superb as the crew returned to the circuit and did roller landing practice before coming back to dispersal at the beautiful, bottom end of Gaydon's airfield. Great days - great ai... read more »read more »

Just a few comments on you write up.
1. It was the ONLY RAF aircraft to ever drop nuclear weapons, and NOT the first.
2. Its demise was through the incorrect choice of alloy for the spars and though they failed in flight through fatigue, it was only after the material had been grossly weakend by galvanic corrosion that it failed.
An excellent site and very informative for the younger air enthusiasts who know little of this very important aircarft that laid out the foundations for the V Force and its Nuc... read more »read more »
